A little project we’re spinning up… (updated Nov 1)

Word.

Updated (November 1)Redgate is tentatively interested!  The general theme I’m proposing is “write about the thing that a DBA should really know.”  The beauty of this theme, of course, is that this can encompass everything from the SQL social circle, to HTML, to career building, to backups and partitioning and DR and code reviews and whatever the hell else.  I’ll be posting on this later today on my blog www.MidnightDBA.com/Jen

Updated (October 26): I’m currently talking to Redgate about their possible interest. I expect to be able to tell you guys something sometime next week, and I also hope to put out the call for abstracts. When we do, it’ll likely be networked; I’ll email the people who emailed me, who will in turn invite people who they think would qualify/be interested.  Finally, we’re still nailing down the book format. We thank you for your patience.

So here’s the deal. I want us to make a MVP Deep Dives-style book, meaning an author per chapter, by PASS Summit 2012. Key details thus far:

  • After some Groupie talk in chat, we’re thinking of calling it SQL: Uncorrupted (Tribal Knowledge from First Time Authors) or something like that.
  • First time book authors only. Some questions have been raised as to whether this means no contributors, etc. If in doubt, ask me.
  • I’m editor, but I’m published now, so I likely won’t be doing a chapter.
  • I may present this book to Redgate for publishing, but they may not be interested. Hell, we may end up just publishing this as a free eBook. No telling. In all, you shouldn’t expect to get rich off of this.
  • We will have one section about “SQL First Timers”, should include sql community stuff, including twitter, nettiquette, summits, who the players are (PLF, SQLSkills, etc).
  • Some other sections should be of a technical nature.

If this is something you might be interested in, shoot me an email at Jen@MidnightDBA.com.  If you know of a nonpublished SQL guy/gal who might be interested, you can pass them the details. But let’s not publicize this yet, mm’kay? No Twitter announcements.
