Un-SQL Friday #005: Bad Interviews

July 19, 2011 News-ish, sqlserverpedia-syndication, SSC, UnSQL 7 Comments

Yesterday a friend told me a tale of an interview he conducted with a, shall we say, less than desirable candidate. (Most of his responses started with “Well, there was this girl, and we were at a party….”). This, again, is an Un-SQL Friday topic if ever there was one!

I hereby declare this Friday Un-SQL Friday. While T-SQL Tuesday is “…the SQL Server blogosphere’s first recurring, revolving blog party….on the chosen [SQL-related] topic,” UN-SQL Friday is a completely intermittant blog party about something SQL-adjacent.

Read this blog, and then write whatever you want about Bad Interviews. Be sure to mention in your blog that you’re writing for Un-SQL Friday, and link to this post. Oh, and have it up any time before midnight on Monday, July 25. Extra credit if you get your submission in ON Friday…an A+ gets you an imaginary virtual gold star!

You can write about a bad interview you’ve given, or one you’ve conducted, or what you imagine to be a bad interview…whatever you like, really.

Happy days,
Jen McCown

  1. Hmm, that sounds like a pretty GOOD interview to me… much more entertaining, at least, than most of the ones I get to participate in :-)

  2. Hrm, not sure I have a blog length story, but I’ll see what I can think of.

It might make sense to have a hash tag for this to read on the show for shorter stories that you read on ustream like the reverse Godfather one.

  3. I’ve posted a few ramblings on the subject here: http://thelonedba.wordpress.com/2011/07/22/un-sql-friday-005-bad-interviews/

(Love that I’m leaving a “Commnet”, BTW!)

  4. [...] (Blog/Twitter), the fairer half of the Midnight DBAs, tagged the SQL Community asking for our bad interview stories. I’m going to give two bad experiences and one surprisingly good [...]

  5. [...] McCown (blog | Twitter), one half of DBAs at Midnight, put out the request for bad interview stories, so I figured I’d chime in. I’ve got two [...]

  6. [...] Recently there was a topic for the Un-SQL Friday. I didn’t participate, but something came along right after the deadline that made me stop and think a bit, and I thought I would write up a quick post. The topic was “bad interviews” and it made me think a bit about the hiring process in general. This past week I was forced to watch watching Happythankyoumoreplease with that guy who still hasn’t told us who our mother is yet. For those that haven’t seen the movie yet I don’t want to spoil it but I will say that there is far less violence and bloodshed than you would expect from that title, I don’t recall even one gunshot which makes me think Hollywood had nothing to do with the making of this film. [...]
