Be in the SQL Yearbook

I’ve been thinking about this for years, and I’m finally doing it. I’m making a SQL Yearbook, and I want you to be in it.

Since first writing this, I have realized that a “yearbook” is primarily an American phenomenon. M-W defines yearbook as “school publication that is compiled usually by a graduating class and that serves as a record of the year’s activities“.

So, a SQL Yearbook is a community publication that is compiled usually by a member of the community and that serves as a record of the year’s activities and participants.

The Summary

Sign up to get your name and picture in the SQL Yearbook. We won’t use your information for sales, or sell/give your info to anyone. The yearbook will be a free download, which you’re free to print if you like!

If you’d like to sponsor, see the Sponsor Plan section below, then email Jen@MidnightDBA.com. Once you choose your level, just donate the amount for your level directly to Doctors Without Borders, marking “SQL Yearbook” as the honoree, and send usthe receipt!

The Details

  • Who: This is not just for people going to PASS Summit. It’s for the whole SQL community.
  • When: Tentative deadline to be a part of this is October 12. I want to have the yearbook ready by PASS Summit
  • Format: I want this to be free to everyone, so the primary publish format will be a public PDF download. I may look into a print option as well, for those who really really want a bound hard copy.
  • Cost: It costs nothing to be in it. Just fill out the form below, or this slightly prettier form.
  • Money: We won’t earn any money on it. We may choose a charity (see the Sep 7 Twitter poll) and look for some sponsors, but all the $$ goes to that charity. UPDATE: The community has chosen Doctors Without Borders!)
  • How your data is used: The information you provide in the form below (and the slightly prettier form) will not be sold or provided to anyone else (except of course for the completely public yearbook that anyone will be able to download, but THAT won’t contain your email address). We won’t add you to any newsletters, or provide sponsors with a list of contacts or anything like that. All information is for the SQL Yearbook, and to allow us to contact you about the SQL Yearbook.
  • Permission: By completing this form, you agree that this information (except your email address) may be published in a book that could be sold as a hard copy. For example, on Amazon.com. The proceeds from the sale of the book WILL go to a non-political charity (e.g., something like Doctors Without Borders or a children’s hospital).
  • Pictures: We want current pictures of your face for the yearbook. Color or black and white is fine. We may include a section of throwback (high school) photos too for the fun of it.
  • Features:
    • There will be an “in memory of” section, that will of course honor Robert Davis and others we’ve lost.
    • I’d like to include AT LEAST a list of events that happened this year. I have all the SQL Saturdays from the website, and the Summit, but I’ll take suggestions for more events.
    • There will probably be fun silly stuff. It’s my project and I have full control, so that could be….interesting.
    • Please add suggestions in the comments, or in the form below.

Adding my notes, for the curious, and to keep track of things:

  • It looks like Lulu Xpress is a good, reasonably priced on-demand printer. A full color high quality yearbook of about 200 pages runs roughly $35.

Sponsor Plan

  • Decaffeinated. $25. Promote your personal blog, or a message, or yourself, or whatever you want on the 2018 SQL Yearbook Community Sponsor page! Up to 200 characters.
  • Half-Caff. $300. A quarter page ad, or section, or whatever you want! Advertise your product, yourself, your team, your favorite Spotify song list…whatever you want! Plus, you get your logo on the “Thanks Sponsors!” page, and in every SQL Yearbook update we send out in 2018.
  • Breakfast Blend. $500. Same as Half-caff, but you get a half page. Plus, you get your logo higher up on the “Thanks Sponsors!” page, and in every SQL Yearbook update we send out in 2018.
  • Espresso. $700. Same as Breakfast Blend, but FULL page! Plus, you get your logo higher up on the “Thanks Sponsors!” page, and in every SQL Yearbook update we send out in 2018.
  • Triple Shot. $2000. Wow, hey, what can we do for you? You want a couple of full page ads and a custom song played on the ukulele by yours truly? That works. Or, maybe, co-promotion of the SQL Yearbook and a full PDF download of your own? Sure. Just, you know, let us know!

Note that the only thing that’s really off the table is a list of SQL Yearbook participants. Even we (MinionWare) won’t be using the sign-ups for any promotional stuff (except for our logo in the Yearbook). We promised people that we would not share their info, to encourage more sign-ups and more interest!

If you’d like to sponsor, email me Jen@MidnightDBA.com. Once you choose your level, just donate the amount for your level directly to Doctors Without Borders, marking “SQL Yearbook” as the honoree, and send me the receipt!
