Remembering Alan Weber, @Aauugold

We lost someone this week. We lost a fellow SQL-ite, a Twitterer, a DBAs@Midnight chatroom live chatter. We lost someone smart and funny, and I’m not remotely qualified to write his tribute…I only met him once or twice.

Last week, we saw Alan enter the chatroom mid-show, and we said our usual “aaaaauuuuGOLD!”  He said he’d been out for surgery, and we all chatted about that a bit, and then went on with the show. Today we heard online, from folk in his user group, that he’d died. It’s just like that, sometimes.

We didn’t know Alan well, like I said. We were always happy to see him Friday nights. I know that somewhere, people are missing him. I’m sorry he’s gone. I’m sorry for their loss. Ours, too.

We’ll hold a small tribute in the preshow tonight at webshow.MidnightDBA.com. If you want, come by at 10:30 Central time and join us.

Our weekly webshow starts Friday! #DBAsAtMidnight

Let’s pretend we’ve never met. Depending on who you are, maybe we haven’t. It’s beside the point, really.

So hi, I’m Jen McCown. My husband Sean and I are SQL Server people – between the two of us, we boast 1 MCM, 6 MVP awards, 25 years as DBAs, and approximately 200,000 strands of thick, luxurious hair.

We run a weekly webshow – “For DBAs, by DBAs” – that’s about to begin its fourth season, this Friday at 11:00pm Central time. OUR FOURTH SEASON!! We’re rather excited.  What can you expect if you drop in to view the show live?

  • The joys of preshow!
  • Live chat with us and other viewers.
  • Us being us…which is to say, pretty informal.
  • SQL and tech news in brief.
  • Tech tips and talks. Sometimes.
  • Book and product reviews and recommendations.
  • Rants, interview notes, awards, techie puppet shows and DBA Theatre.
  • Awards, both good and bad!
  • Foul language. Seriously, you might want to skip us if you’re not into rather strong words.

We had a nice break, but we’re really looking forward to Season 4. Join us Friday at webshow.MidnightDBA.com

In the meantime, check out back episodes of DBAs@Midnight at www.MidnightDBA.com, and drop a line in the comments below….what are you looking forward to in S4?

Happy days,
Jen McCown

MidnightDBA tutorials and webshow now on iTunes!

We’ve been slacking for way too long, but as of this week our video RSS feed is up to date! Now you can subscribe to conveniently get ALL of our videos – tutorials and the DBAS@Midnight webshow (warning: the webshow is explicit for language).

We do have this feed hooked up to iTunes, but right now it’s behaving oddly. If you go look at our iTunes page or find Midnight DBA in your iTunes app, the latest video is from February 2011. BUT, if you subscribe via iTunes (or unsubscribe/resubscribe), you’ll see that latest vids in your subscription. Maybe they just need time to catch up, I don’t know.

In any case, go subscribe, enjoy all the videos, leave us some feedback!

Happy days,
Jen McCown
