New DBAs@Midnight Vid: Certs, Troubleshooting, and Backups

Length: 30m.  It's okay, take it in shifts if you like…there's a good break point at 14 minutes. Here's the DBAs@Midnight Certs, Tshooting, and Backups video page.  We'll try to have the vid up on iTunes soon, for all you MP3 junkies.

So last night we recorded our first DBAs@ video since the PASS Summit in November!  We kinda wore ourselves out at PASS with all the awesome interviews we did, so we took some time to recuperate. I suspect this will be an annual trend.  (By the way, our daughter drew the picture between us when she was about 6. It's a cartoon of family members drawn as Oobi.  Oobi is a hand puppet, without the actual puppet. Moving on.)  I promised you guys show notes, so here's what we covered, with appropriate and promised linkage:

Sean made Donald Farmer's Top 10 SQL Bloggers of 2009 list, which is amazing and cool.

I re-announce the #sqlhelp hash tag on Twitter. Brent Ozar (@BrentO on Twitter) blogged about #sqlhelp here.

Buck Woody bought, wore, and photo'd his very own MidnightDBA Buck Woody Shirt on Zazzle.com. I honestly can't remember the last time I've been happier about anything on the internetz.

We show off William Stanek's Windows 7 book we're giving away this week. Go, enter, win.

Sean's first rant of the night: Certifications.  He's studying for his second MCITP, this one in the SQL development track. Shout out to @SQLVariant (Aaron Nelson)!  Sean has a couple of major issues with the cert process.

The cert Sean is studying for inspired his Designing Efficient Functions video, posted yesterday.

We got in touch with the training software people we use, and were surprised at their attitude. (That's a teaser, see, because we were pleasantly surprised. Except now it's not a teaser. Damn.)

Jen's rant of the night is on companies and DB professionals who don't actually care about their data.

Here's the link to the Buck Woody DR story I mention. (Thanks Buck for finding it for me again…) He's @BuckWoody on Twitter, doncha know.

Sean's second rant is on troubleshooting, which gets us into a brief chat on the general lack of formal training…and also an obscure quote. Email us with the source of the quote, and you win a book! We're all about the giveaways.

And finally, action items for us:

  • Publish this vid to iTunes
  • Remember to post the deadlock video
  • Troubleshooting materials – flowchart and video series
  • Send a book to the contest winner
