How did we get into selling software? How did MinionWare happen?

Years ago, our resident visionary and original MidnightDBA Sean McCown was the only DBA for a company with over 1,000 SQL Server instances. Like any DBA in his position, he started automating tasks and alerting in pure self defense. He managed that environment by himself for a year, and likes to tell how he went home on time and didn’t lose sleep. (He’s telling the truth.)

Most database administrators start coding these kinds of things…there are just too many tasks to take on. You have to start automating things. The difference is that we made it our full time job to keep going, to perfect this automation and management.

The  new UI is shiny! (And useful)

While we usually prefer to run stored procedures and queries against the Minion Enterprise data – I mean, hey, there’s nothing like enabling ‘optimize for ad hoc workloads’ for 78 instances at once! – we do recognize that a GUI can be awfully convenient sometimes.
So, we made one!

We debuted the Minion Enterprise user interface beta at PASS Summit last month. It’s beautiful, user friendly, and you can still run things against 78 instances at once.
