Why Mommy’s been so distracted lately….

Sorry about that kids…

…but Mommy’s been jobhunting.

Last few weeks I’ve been interviewing for a few positions around D/FW, and in the last two weeks, the two gigs (we’ll call them Rafters and Jawtire, just to keep things nice and anonymous) that I was most interested in showed real interest in bringing me on. It went something like this:

  • Phone interview with Jawtire.
  • In-person interview with Jawtire.
  • Phone interview with Rafters.
  • In-person interview with Rafters.
  • Jawtire said they’d give me an offer.
  • Then Rafters brought me back in to interview with one of their C*Os.
  • Then Jawtire made me an offer of $x per year.
  • Then Rafters offered me $x + 3%.
  • Then they both wanted a decision today.

Then I had to think really really hard about each place. There are a few differentiating details about the jobs – distance from home, variations in type of work, differences in process, scheduling – but when weighted against what was important to me, the differences were really very, very small.

How the hell do you choose between two good jobs with good pay/work/distance/culture/opportunity??  Yes, I made the list with pros and cons….three times.

One company is sticking on a couple of points…the other looks like they’re willing to go the distance for me.  I suspect tomorrow I’ll sign on with them.  It’s been a very strange experience, though, to have two offers so very like in all the important areas, only differentiating in small differences.  It’s the problem to have, sure…but when it comes down to it, how do you decide?
