DBA Roadmap – the inside dirt/scoop/poop/ew

Hello dear Groupies! My, but it has been a long time since I’ve dragged my lazy self over here. As you may’ve heard, Sean and I have ramped up a new project: The soon-to-be-available-for-purchase DBA Roadmap!!  We’re terribly excited, as you can tell by the exclamation points.

I figure you the people might like a little of the inside info on this. For starters, I’m feeling a bit nervous about this. We have produced a metric asston of content over the last several years, but this will be the first that we actually expect (hope) people to PAY for. There’s something very different about that…up until now, we’ve been able to say “Quit whining, it’s free.” With this, not so much.

The whole thing came about from an intersection of at least two things: First, for approximately forever we’ve been kicking around HOW to monetize the MidnightDBA brand, without getting all annoying and ad-emblazoned and sellout-y.  Second, I have read and reread the Four Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss, and have been really wanting to do something along the lines of “automated income” (just read the book, mm’kay?)

So for the last few weeks we’ve been plotting and planning and ramping up the infrastructure, and now we’re getting closer to completing our first project. Yay for everybody.

I’m making the general public sign up via the website to get the downloads, but you (dear Groupies) can skip the hoops: The FREE sample track “DBA Roadmap Introduction” is up on DBARoadmap.BandCamp.com, and our free PDF-career tips-brochure thingy can be downloaded at http://dbaroadmap.com/download/dbaroadmap.pdf

Now, I wanna hear feedback…anything you got, just throw it into comments or email (Jen@MidnightDBA.com or DBARoadmap@gmail.com).  And that’s suggestions, critiques, questions, comments, testimonials, encouragement, abuse…whatever you want.

AND, once it’s up, I’m sure we’ll put together some special for you, our loyal peoplz. No idea what that’ll be, but it’ll be special. Just like all of you.

Smooches,
Jen, and Sean’s hair

P.S. Because I can hear it becoming a FAQ already: No, we have not abandoned Tribal SQL. Yes, we have been having a horrifically difficult time agreeing on chapter selections, and making time to do it. This entire Roadmap project may well be one big excuse to avoid the difficult decisions. And yes, we do realize that time is running right the hell out on Tribal….

  • Without being all, “me too, me too,” I wanted to say that I’m reading Four Hour Work Week right now (about 1/3 finished). So far I am struggling with some of his arguments for working less. As a developer I have content that I have to produce each week and there isn’t really a way to reduce that.

I really like the DBARoadmap idea and I’ll be interested to see how it develops.

    • Please, be as “me too” as you like…

Like any self-help book, there is some number > 0% * the content that applies to your life, but it may not necessarily be 100%. What’s more, it may apply more LATER than it does NOW. And finally, he’s got a hell of a lot of good things to say about trimming the fat from our professional careers. I can’t tell you how in favor of THAT I am.
